This is on the kitchen counter in an image from a property listing I'm looking at, and I can't figure out what it is. Can anyone clue me in?!

@emanaton “coil candle” is the search term your looking for. The theory is that you can pull out an hour or so of candle, and it will self-extinguish.

@emanaton It's a self-extinguishing coil candle. You open the clamps, pull up the length you want, and light it. When it burns down to the clip, it extinguishes.

@emanaton Legend has it they were called "Courting Candles." When the suitor came to visit the girl, the girl's dad would pull up a length of candle, light it, and when it burned out, it was time to go. Supposedly, rich suitors got more length than poor suitors. :-)

Thanks for the info on the device, and thank you VERY much for the folklore around it - super interesting! <3
