@elazar Huh. That explains the "Everyone gets free nitro for a week" that just happened. Gotta pump those numbers up to sound appetizing for the ghouls.

@elazar What? The company with ~$1B of venture capital funding is about to have its exit? Say it ain’t so! If only there was some way we could’ve seen this coming!

@deFractal @elazar IRC. we can even end to end encrypt it unlike discord.

@bobmagicii @elazar I remember IRC. And I’m looking for something roughly feature compatible, so younger folks would be willing to use it. But maybe the right app, presenting IRC through a modern UI, and mixing in support for social features (such as stable user-to-user connections), voice and video streaming with echo and noise cancellation, game integration, etc., could work.

@deFractal @bobmagicii I'd probably be biased in speaking to it considering that the longest-lived open source project I've spearheaded was a PHP IRC bot... 😅

@elazar @bobmagicii I’ll talk with some of the kids these days, and see if I can get ideas of a minimum viable initial feature set to begin their migration from Discord.

@deFractal @bobmagicii Avoid XMPP. Too many ways to fuck that shit right up in my experience.

@elazar @deFractal lolol word xmpp was so bad.

@bobmagicii @elazar @deFractal Matrix is the open and federated solution with the modern UI you’re looking for, but it barely works, in my experience.

@ramsey @bobmagicii @elazar And from what I’ve read, they implemented their cryptography incorrectly. However, it’s a point of reference for conversations. (I’d forgotten about it.)

@deFractal @ramsey @elazar yeah they derped their encryption a few times. the server as a whole is sluggish, its not even something i willingly put on my radar anymore.
