@davidbisset hah! For a while I was working on the design and testing of new WiMAX base station hardware. Motorola Networks bet on it and lost, sadly.

I see these online wars as a bit like format wars too - VHS Vs Betamax, Blu-ray Vs DVD-HD etc..

@sarajw Yeah - thanks for sharing that because i think i thought the same. My kids have no idea what those letters mean!

@davidbisset Would have been nice if the folks who started Bluesky had participated in the standards process with the Social Web WG at the W3C instead of striking out on their own. That WG spent years doing research and gathering community feedback, and they published several standards for interoperability.

I’m cautiously pessimistic about Bluesky’s commitment to openness and decentralization.

@ramsey that’s fair. I have some “probably won’t happen” items for Bluesky and Mastodon.

I think though the “openness” most openness advocates want to see shouldn’t be their top priority. Lots of other more fundamental pieces to work out. Assuming they get to that point, I hope those that have been divided about “outside the Fediverse” communities in the past are more welcoming than they have been in the past.

Appreciate the reply.
